Yep. And the consequences from this created problem are going to be devastating. My personal example is my own building here in DC. 1,000+ apartments, a 15% vacancy rate (people moved out when covid job loss first hit last year, no one moved in), PLUS a large number of unemployed "covid squaters" who, because of the moratorium, are living here rent free.
Even worse is that in DC the rent moratorium has expanded into a "rental justice" effort that has people who CAN pay rent REFUSING to do so "in solidarity" with the squatters.
I've been here for 40+ years. (Old Fart Pede) I arrived here shortly after the idiots in Congress gave the Federal Jurisdiction "Home Rule" (1973). It went straight downhill after that--in the hands of the Democratic Machine.
The DC that I loved disappeared years ago. But at this point, I'll stay. Too many personal connections, including loved ones in nearby care homes.
Will toast a few marshmallows in the upcoming Chauvin bonfires. (Regardless of the trial outcome, BLM/Antifa will burn the place again.)
So you're paying DC taxes and everyone is refusing to pay rent. I have a feeling the city is going to do whatever they can to help the squatters as well
Perhaps the long term goal is to have owners lose the properties so that "certain parties" can snatch them up.
I feel for you having to deal with this. We have dealt with squatters in normal times and it was a pain then. I can't imagine what it's like now.
Government makes a problem, and its solution is to use my tax dollars to fix it. Somehow I'm the bad guy for saying this is wrong

"Buy land in the sticks". Leftists need not apply, please.
