Hippies still had optimism. While they had nothing, they could change their circumstances easily enough when they chose to do so. They could tolerate poverty because it was only ever a temporary state for them.
The difference now is that today's angry Gen-Y communists can't change their circumstance. They've done everything they were told to do. They went to college and earned degrees (worthless ones, but they weren't to know). They acquired massive debt, and Black-Jesus made it so they couldn't declare bankruptcy to clear it. Now they're trapped. They'll never afford a house, and never fill that house with kids. They're only going to get angrier as infertility looms.
Remember how much hippies chafed at "working for the man"? Todays young adults would KILL for a job with no entry requirement that could let them buy a house and raise a family.
