The “number of registered guns” column in the table at the end of this story pertains only to weapons in the ATF National Firearms Registry, i.e. registered machine guns, suppressors, short barreled rifles, mortars and other destructive devices, and a handful of other types of exotic weapons that have been regulated at the national level since the National Firearms Act of 1934.

The number of non-NFA firearms is at least 200 times greater, and in most places they are not registered at the state or local level either. The tiny pool of NFA weapons is statistical noise that has almost nothing to do with the gun-ownership percentages that are the topic of this story.

Once again our brilliant journalistic establishment has done another piss-poor job of presenting factual data about firearms — gee, what a shock!

I thought upstate NY was rural and red so it shocks me that they’re last. Thought it would’ve been Maryland or Delaware or something
