Convent - convene - get together. can be men or women. They interact with the "real" world some.

Monastery - mono - one - alone - can be men or women. Place where people live largely/completely in solitary - and don't interact regularly with the "real" world

So the act of bringing in people and the chemicals to inject somehow introduced the virus and killed 2 nuns.
