I just started reading a book titled "As Nature Made Him" by John Colapinto (2000). It is the story of the life of a man (a twin) whose botched circumcision as an infant resulted in his being raised as a girl. It provides insight into the psychologist, John Money, who coined the term "gender identity" and promoted transgender treatment. Money had a deep hatred of men and traditional morality that he turned into a career. What happened to the boy and his twin brother is tragic. Very interesting read. "Science" is hardly apolitical.
Money was so awful even the left has vilified him. He was a crackpot who took advantage of a tragic situation to push his personal agenda. But so is the author, who mixes fact with propaganda in the telling of the tale. Money is far from the first to work with changing sex. I'm also unaware of him being involved in any other surgery, so that hardly makes it a career.
Amusingly, conservatives frequently cite this man's disaster in their anti-transgender arguments, even though his experiment proves you can't change the mind to suit the body, which is why most trans are treated with hormones and surgery, the body is changed as best science can manage to match the mind.
There is about an equal agenda to demonize transgender people and those who treat them from the right as there is anyone from the left pushing it. The result is a bunch of people victimized by one side and shunned by the other. Those seeking to demonize don't hesitate to lie or exaggerate their claims, often displaying complete ignorance of what they speak, and those seeking to promote.. well the same thing.
It doesn't take much time to be informed on how things really work and speak from a position of knowledge, but propaganda always works to generate emotional reactions from idiots who don't stop to think or examine the topic at hand.
You sound like you have experience in the field. It has been 30 years since I treated patients who were transitioning. I was referring to his career being centered in the psychology of transexuality, as he was not an M.D.

Oh yes, I've heard of John Money. Pure evil.
Definitely. His theories were so clearly animated by his own dark psychology.

Hmm. I just started, I'll be alert re: the author. Can you say more about the author's agenda?

There's a big red flag right there
Not sure what you mean. Are you saying transsexuality is exclusively a biological condition?
