There was no correct move he could have done while she was failing to fire and their commander didn't step in. The soldier dude couldn't even tell her to stop pulling while he was walking over since he's not her superior. Even if their comamnder had to step in it would be a humiliation since he would have to babysit her during a public show.
The sound comes from gas expansion. There is less gas because it is not a real round and doesnt have the same propellant charge and you dont understand that. Also the brake routs gas out the sides not straight down
