Even the trade unions, I left mine this year.

Unions are the ultimate grift....they take money from their rank and file and they take payoffs from the body they are supposed to protect their members from. Anyone hitched to a union is a sucker and deserves to have their money taken away from them.

I never liked unions. They Smell bad and make your eyes water when cutting them.

Except members of unions almost always make more money than peers left to work for whatever "the market will bear". Average American man's earning power peaked in the 1970s.

Perhaps its considered one of your rare exceptions, but when membership became optional, everyone abandoned Wisconsin's teachers union overnight.

I am against public sector unions and especially teachers' unions. Holding society hostage by threatening kids.

Gonna take a wild guess American manufacturing peaked at the same time...

Certainly part of the story. Why was offshoring so popular? Virtual slaves in other places are cheaper.

As for a chance at a middle class existence, there was a time when men who risk a lot in construction could afford a home.

Right before the unions pushed for "equality" in the workplace and displaced many happy American women by making them have to leave their children. A man used to earn all the income of a family, but now thanks to "equality", you can't support a family of ONE on what a single person makes, unless you're in a trade, management, or a specialty, and even then you have to put in the time for it. People used to support their families working at grocery stores, for crying out loud.

I think there's a great deal of confusion on this board about the subject of unions. They were key to men making enough to supporting families. I am not talking about government unions which are a strange phenomenon.

I have worked as a union member and on my own. Done alright both ways. But looking back it's clear that there are sound reasons for unions. Do you doubt for one moment that the wealthy owners of corporations work to stop unions to maximize profits at all costs? They collude to suppress wages. They lie about labor shortages to get more H1B visas. Llisten, I understand Joan the word union has been demonized, but it's really beyond debate that when negotiating with someone who has almost all the cards, strengt h in numbers means more than take it or leave it scraps. And some employers and unions have real mutual respect knowing that they need each other.

It really depends on the union. Small local unions seem to work well for their members. Large unions like the UAW work well for senior members and bosses, but poorly for more recent members.

Sure. And sometimes unions go too far barking their own members. But often they have been a check against the psychopaths who often own and operate large firms, e.g. a Soros or DuPont.

So it’s only about the money then? Lol...using your logic why not be a bank robber? Makes more money right?

Ten carpenters agreeing to demand a base rate for labor is akin to robbing a bank? Please. Free speech, free association. Defending your interests is no crime. A crime that cries to heaven: mistreating workers. Keep unknowingly pleasing Soros and Gates and Buffett and Carlos Slim and Zuckerberg.

There need to be conservative unions.

"There needs to be conservative communists" :-)

They've been winning for over a century. It's pretty clear the revolution part works. It's after they take power that it all fucks up.

They're called nations

Modern conservatives seem to be opposed to those. Baby-steps, I guess?

Can we have one that actually does something?

Can we have one that doesn't actively work against us?
