Barter system is too inefficient, they'll go to gold and silver. The US has experienced hyperinflation (bond notes, government IOUs) 3 times before and every time it went back to good and silver.

Doesn't matter if a government exists or not, gold and silver are usually the fallback. Not trying to offend
