It's more that we thought that the threat was over after the fall of the USSR and later Asian revolutions ushering out despots for democracies, at least in Korea and Taiwan. Most believed that Tiananmen square didn't get them this time, but in a few years the students will return.
We lost our vigilance when the politicians believed in "the end of history", with a new political system dominated by "western style" democracies. Then we got distracted with the War on Terrorism.
Now, we see China with their own view of the world. One where the leaders of China adorn themselves with the mantle of the Mandate from Heaven, all the rest of the earth kowtows to Beijing.
The war on terror was only a distraction because the same media that now push BLM LGBTQ made the US fight with one hand tied to the back. Dark Muslim victims of drone strikes, talk of imperialism (without anyone taking oil pre-Trump), all of that fed into the same white guilt fear of being called racist and made the US act weak and restrained. The media undermined US efforts from the start. If the US had dominated by force without caring about enemy casualties there would be a long list of obedient satellite states vying to crush Iran and embargoing Chyna for us.
