Open carry is fucking retarded anyways. You lose the element of surprise. If everyone knows you have a gun they are going to plan their attacks based on that knowledge.
Never go to a protest with a weapon. That in itself is intent to protect yourself from harm you know could happen, which in itself is intent to harm others. Why else would you go somewhere with a weapon, knowing you’ll most likely have to use. Self defense would be staying out of harms way in the first place, which is just staying home and not getting involved.
Personally If you wanna carrying the only thing you are doing is challenging yourself to make correct decisions and keep a level head. I would argue that in places of more danger you should be more inclined to have protection. That said, you're absolutely right about staying home.
