And now that Biden is in he straight up said the president/congress are free to rewrite the constitution as needed. The "insurrection" was the sexiest excuse they could find, but they would have gone ahead with some other pretext if the 6th didn't happen.
Trump was in the way of the lobbyist gravy train. Politicians on both sides were incentivized monetarily to get rid of him, and every one of their campaign contributors pushed for that.
Expecting any help from DC was always a bit naive. This needed, and still needs, to be solved at the State Legislature level. Conveniently, that's what the Constitution dictates.
