This is a douche move, but incidentally their Photoshop retoucher is top notch. You have to change a lot of facial features to go from fear to happiness, and if you never saw the originals you wouldn’t know these were faked.
I’m not sure what to believe here. I can understand Vice’s explanation somewhat, that some of the families wanted a photo of their relative smiling since it was the only photo they had, but I also think those pictures should have just been given to the families, and not been used in the article.
As soon as the photos got used in the article they started erasing history. They should know better as journalists, so that’s their fuck up no matter what explanation they try to give.
They lied about talking to the families.

I agree that whoever did the retouching had mad skills, but I seriously doubt that it was done by a human. I am almost certain that this was done by ML.
As for your point re vice, I completely disagree. They knew exactly what they were doing. They just got called out and they are covering their ass.
I'm 90% sure it was machine learning as well. So much digital work is now being done by automated systems...while we "import" millions of unskilled illegals as even skilled jobs for our citizens are being nuked by automation.
I'm pretty sure it was done with the program called FaceApp, which uses AI to alter portraits. Example.
As a United States Marine Veteran this is pure evil. We never ever smile in pictures. Exceptions are the silly shitbag bitches, Wookies probably, and pictures of our drunken escapades throughout the barracks.
Maybe someone should alter David Chipman's Waco photo so he is smiling. That's wild, I've never heard of machine learning doing this until today.
