I'm a foreign film - and being an Army vet, a military film - FANATIC and I just finished up a trio of Finnish films that I didn't realize until after watching the most recent that it was the second remake. Tuntematon Sotilas aka The Unknown Soldier.
I started with the linked and most recent one (2017) and then watched in reverse (1985 and original in 1955). It concerns a fictionalized account of a battalion fighting during WW 2 the 'border wars' between itself and the Soviet Union. 3 hours apiece but you're so riveted it passes by instantly - my preference is the 2017 which is mindblowing but they're ALL good. I rank easily with Patton or the scary-good Idi I Smotri (Come And See) from 1985 Soviet Union.
