My favorite part was when the black conservative in Sacramento was mockingly asked if he knew what a 'racoon' was. His response was amazing - paraphrasing, "Yeah I know what a racoon is. Hell yeah I'm a raccoon; I'm Rocket Raccoon. I love Guardians of the Galaxy!"

The slur "coon" actually doesn't refer to the animal at all. It's derived from barracoon, which were holding/confinement buildings for Africans captured by other Africans and held on the west coast of Africa to be sold to European slave traders.

definitely heard it used to refer to any poor / "lesser" rural folks (whites too). Usage is broader
