We also dealt with the Metric System for a while, in the days when government was greasing the tracks of Globalism to begin the Big Push of moving manufacturing overseas.
Two things happened at the same time that didn't connect for me until later. "De-segregation" had another companion that was actually equally disruptive to the learning process: lowering the grading standards. When the jogger kids flooded in, turning my school into a violent inner-city kindergarten full of future prison inmates, the school systems lowered the grading standards to make it easier to pass them to the next grade. This resulted in 7th/8th graders old enough to drive to school, and functionally-illiterate kids entering high school (both black and white.)
How about this: it was so unusual to have a kid at our school with good reading skills that they had me tutoring junior-high kids when I was a 2nd grader. And that's before they dropped the grading standards (and the horde of jogger kids.) After desegregation, we had to stop that because the jogger kids were too violent: even though I/we were trying to help them, they would often threaten or attack students or teachers who dared inflict knowledge upon them (and/or interrupt whatever they wanted to be doing at the moment.)
One might think they would try to find an intelligent solution, one would be wrong. They started taking an hour+ off most days to watch Sesame Street, like we were in a damn day-care (with prison rules.) I am not kidding, they were showing us Sesame Street in 8th grade, still trying to teach the alphabet to 16-17 year olds who somehow passed a drivers' test. What was really sticking out for me was the Leftist/"diversity" propaganda, some days Sesame Street did the whole show in Spanish, and of course the show itself is a preachy "diversity" parable.
