Reasons off the top of my head -- a Senator and a Congressman who are part of the Dem machine and will vote as they're told to vote; an even more massive stream of Federal money to fund Cabal Central.
In terms of whether DC has what it takes to actually be a state -- nope.
Another major consideration -- and possible stumbling block-- is that DC is a Federal Jurisdiction, not an independent entity. All that has to be dealt with.
The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of U.S. Congress; the district is therefore not a part of any U.S. state. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River near the country's East Coast. The City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the national capital. In 1801, the land, formerly part of Maryland and Virginia (including the settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria), officially became recognized as the federal district. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia, including the city of Alexandria; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the district.
Congress gave DC Home Rule in 1973 (during Watergate, Nixon was president, not sure how the process went)
TL;DNR -- this is a fascinating, and complicated legal / political science / legislative issue. I'll try to find some spare time to research it more thoroughly and will post results here.
P.S. DC is ALREADY insolvent. Covid has helped to put it further in the red. Our Metro system is bust, and they're considering closing 15+ stations, including some that used to be major commuter locations. Tourism brought in $8 Billion in revenue in 2018 -- covid killed that. We've lost probably 30% or more of our small businesses / restaurants. More lost corp taxes.
What seems like a lifetime ago, I watched the 'Cowboys for Trump' ride into DC on horses (as it was live streamed) and was in awe at the beauty of the buildings and monuments. I promised to visit (from UK) one day. It was such a joyous, patriotic demonstration, whilst watching I even cried.
So sad to see what is happening there now. I can't be the only person who has struck DC off their 'to do' list.
this is unconstitutional...and would end up in our iffy SCOTUS. Congress does NOT have this power.
SCOTUS is apt to make up some BS opinion or claim it's moot.
DC is liberal as shit, by making it a state they would pick up 2 Democrat senators.
