I quite wanted to drive up, but my family outvoted me! The sleeper train is actually rather nice - and super convenient, you go from the middle of Melbourne right to the middle of Sydney while you have a good night’s sleep. It’s a good way to travel.
God only knows what you have in America, isn’t Amtrak run by the government? Wasn’t Hunter on the board, and got confirmed because he said he “travels” on a lot of trains?
Dude..As near as I can tell...our trains only run East to West or vice-versa. I do not think a person can take a train from Oregon to Florida. If I am wrong, you can bet someone here will prove it.
I took a train from Denver to Chicago. The toilets were dirty and broken before we got on the train. Many of the seats wouldn't recline or were always reclined. We were hours late because passenger trains have to park to let freight go by. The only side rails are apparently in rail yards at chemical plants and refineries. When we finally arrived, the train for the rest of our trip was lost, no one knew where it was. We rented a car and drove the rest of the way.
Also, no booze except that sold in the club car. The club car is never open. If the conductor finds you with booze, he'll sneak up and steal it. You'll never see him again unless you break out more booze.
You can take the Empire builder from Portland to Chicago. Then you have your choice of Lakeshore limited to New York, capital Limited to DC or the cardinal to DC or New York. After that you have your choice of one of two silver service trains that will take you to Florida from either New York or DC.
I one took the Auto-Train round-trip from/to Sanford, FL to Lorton, VA. Honestly, it was an interesting experience, but I probably wouldn’t do it again. I had a coach seat and it was really uncomfortable. A sleeper would’ve been great, but they were also very expensive.
The dinner service was interesting though. I do remember that the food was good. I had never been on a train like that before, so I didn’t know how to explore it much (like to find the club car). Wish I did.
Hubby and I rode the Amtrak around the USA in 2016. Sleeper cabins the whole way. We had a great time, made some amazing memories. For international travellers, it was better than dealing with the militant airport security. Sad that we won't be doing it again.
All long-distance Amtrak trains have sleeper cars. If it’s Chicago to east of the Mississippi there’s single level cars west of the Mississippi Super liner two level cars.
The issue right now with Amtrak, in my opinion, is the food. Because of Rona, they are only offering microwaved food right now as opposed to the traditional diner. It gets even worse east of the Mississippi. Trains like the Lakeshore Limited (New York/Boston to Chicago), Silver service trains from New York to Miami, city of New Orleans (Chicago to New Orleans) In the capital limited and cardinal, both Chicago to DC, Despite all having diner cars on them, some of them brand new, they have permanently suspended traditional diner service and go with microwavable dinners.
Do we even have sleeper trains in America? I would just drive my truck and get a room when I feel the need to get drunk.

You wouldn't want to.
