Honestly who cares? Take a picture. Document it, file it away, whatever. Its a scribble on a rock. It's worth studying, but a human putting a metal spike in a rock next to a place where another human drew a picture isn't a big deal.
I care. I don’t want some acid tripping hippy with a go pro defacing historical artifacts. It’s not a scribble on a rock anymore than the constitution is scribble on paper. Respect both as both are important. It’s human history and it matters.
Gilbert told Climbing that he, “would like to apologize to the local indigenous people for any disrespect or damages that have been caused by any of my actions. I would also like to apologize to the climbing community for misrepresenting and damaging the way the public views climbers. It was never my intention to cause pain to anyone and [it] was an uneducated mistake that I am dedicated and committed to making right.”
Thank you for posting the article. I’m glad he apologized, I said that more in jest but it still irked me that he did it. It was wrong but he doesn’t deserve death threats, either. There are less destructive ways of climbing than using bolts and anchors, I’d be fine if they used a belay or repel, something that doesn’t damage the rock face.
It was important to whoever made it and pretending it’s not is what is stupid. It’s art and a historical treasure and it should be respected. The constitution is more important, yes, and I don’t want to see it vandalized either.
If I carve my name in a tree, does that mean the tree should never be cut down? Can everyone start gouging their graffiti into the rocks at national parks, would you be OK with that?

This was no hippy.

I’d rather someone get enjoyment out of it. Bet the 5.3 is making people happier than the petroglyph (which is still there by the way) .
No, that's stupid.

State and Fed laws protect these pieces of history. Thousands of miles of acceptable climbing areas without defacing history.
the climber has been found and deeply regrets his actions. Claims to have not known they were pictographs. Unknown if charges will be filed.
