It’s why I’m not for people carving their names into the pyramid or painting their shit art on national park trails. I’ll agree with you that people carving rocks today is graffiti by defacing public parks and culture, sure. But to whomever carved these glyphs, rock art, old graffiti; that was their way of communicating something so important they decided to carve it. I respect that and don’t want it destroyed.
So why doesn't that standard apply today to people who want to carve something into rocks?
