It's been going on for more than 100 years, I'm pretty sure. Maybe from the country's foundation. Teddy Roosevelt claimed he got cheated out of the Republican nomination through backdoor dealings. That's why he started his own political party. Lincoln's wife was going around bragging she'd marry the next President of the United States--while she was dating Lincoln and Douglas.
