It wasn't until over halfway through the war that Fredrick Douglas made it about slave as well. Most of the Union couldn't have giving less of a shit about slavery. Abraham Lincoln litterally campaigned about not wanting to touch the souths slaves, as he new it was crucial at that time to their economy.
