Contrary to what public school teaches, the Civil War was not about slavery. It was about reuniting seceeding states. It wasn't until over halfway through the war that Fredrick Douglas made it about slave as well. Most of the Union couldn't have giving less of a shit about slavery. Abraham Lincoln litterally campaigned about not wanting to touch the souths slaves, as he new it was crucial at that time to their economy.
