We've actually been evolving away from that setup, towards monogamy, but we're in a weird in between state. The reason is that, in large societies, the "beta males" (which are really just the average guys, i.e. a plumber is a "beta male" in primatology) vastly outnumber the "alpha" males, and basically maintain society with their labor. When the beta males no longer have incentive to maintain society, you get collapse and reformation. This either happens due to them withdrawing and doing the minimal amount of work to support themselves (think, porn and video games), or via violent revolution (think, MAGA pedes that are disgusted with being taxed to support today's liberal women).
The problem with that setup is that it creates a surplus of young men with no dating prospects. In order for this to work, you need an outlet for those men. In the case of mormons they used young boys to do the dangerous work of mining. In the case of islam, those men form an informal army that is invading the rest of the world.
