Speaking as a Horticulture geek, both are edible tubers; there are variants in colour for both. Sweet potatoes are also beige with an ivory interior. The confusion is underscored by grocers selling them as both Sweet Potatoes & Yams. What you see in most produce departments are Sweet Potatoes - even the orange-ish varieties.
The difference between them is that they're from completely different families:
Yams = Dioscorea alata or D. batatas (Dioscoreaceae)
Sweet potatoes = Ipomaea batatas (Convulvulaceae)
It's food. Nothing more, nothing less.
Why look for structural racism in the vegetable department? Just why?
This never-ending quest to locate & promote structural racism:
beyond ridiculous......
