Pope Benedict (Josef Ratzinger) foresaw a time when the casual Catholics would start abandoning the Church, leaving only those with a committed belief. Fortunately for the world, the Church does its best work in difficult conditions.

Which is why, at my somewhat advanced I age, I am completing Catechism on my way to baptism and confirmation. Something about dire situations that attracts me.

Welcome home.

When the Romans stopped executing us, we started moving into the desert (St. Benedict, in particular). We're not supposed to be completely comfortable in human society. I always tell my kids to check their faith if they're fitting in too well.

Anyway, I'm excited to hear about your journey. The world is trying to take a lot from us, and it may very well succeed. But it can't take Jesus from us. It tried that once, and it didn't go as planned.
