BECAUSE IT IS CRITICAL FOR INATE IMMUNE SYSTEM FUNCTION

And why aren't people just buying the basic supplements themselves, like all of us have done? (Rhetorical question, no need to answer.)

25
LadyLuck 25 points ago +25 / -0

Their healthcare prolly pays for it if it's prescribed. It's why American doctors write prescriptions for ibuprofen.

15
Reave 15 points ago +15 / -0

Yes this is accurate. I get a prescription if I want the health insurance to pay for it. (This isnt covered by basic Canadian health care, ie many people pay for their prescriptions)

Sporadica 12 points ago +12 / -0

Canadian here, if you can't afford the 7 maple dollars for 200 vitamin D (1000iu each) thqt lasts a couple months you have more things to worry about than covid.

Side note for anyone, don't take vitamin D all at once if you're supplementing, split your dose into 4 (I take 4 pills a day unless I spent a good time outdoors that day and how the sun is that day) and take them at wakeup, lunch, dinner, and bedtime.

Is a mapLe dollar the same as a Canadian tire dollar?

5
Isolated_Patriot 5 points ago +5 / -0

It has more to do with stupid people only doing what their doctor tells them.

I used to think Canada had something over the US by virtue of their doctors being more likely to prescribe supplements, something few American doctors would ever do, and their propensity to prescribe hard drugs only for a limited time, not for life.

The supplements can actually legally list what they are good for, whereas it's a crime in the US. It's also illegal for pharmaceuticals to advertise to the public.

But that's all just icing on the shit sandwich that is a broken socialized system of despair. It likely has more to do with saving the government money on prescription costs, than it actually does with helping people.

Check out the manufacturer funded study that allows the Canadian supplement ColdFX to claim it cures colds. I think it had 13 participants and was 0.86% more effective than placebo. The Canadian version of the FDA is really on top of things.

Generic ibprofin is cheap as fuck... All generics are.

1
SevenThunders 1 point ago +1 / -0

Maybe Canada is subject to the Codex Alimentarius laws that prevent them from buying their own supplements. You have to go through a doctor!

They've been trying to outlaw supplements here in the US as well.

1
residue69 1 point ago +1 / -0

Former senator Orin Hatch was responsible for stonewalling that. Lots of supplement manufacturers in Utah.

That's what I don't get about this shit. I've been doing Zinc, C, D, and melatonin since the scam started. None were ever out of stock; usually B1G1 free even.

The hell is wrong with people? You'll get your skeevy Kratom shit from a gas station that doesn't sell gas but those cheap readily available vitamins are just a step too far.

X to doubt.

Your average white person only needs to be out in the direct rays of the sun for about ten minutes to get a daily supply of Vitamin D. In Canada that might take a bit longer since they’re at a higher latitude and the sun’s rays are more angled. People with more melanin takes a bit longer too since their tone skin blocks more of the sun’s rays.

Not being able to prescribe it seems pretty dumb though, it’s just a vitamin.

Uzaka123 10 points ago +10 / -0

Some people's bodies just straight up don't produce enough. My dad and I are out in the sun all the time and still gotta take supplements for it.

10
lawlady1776 10 points ago +10 / -0

And a lot of people don't know this, but vitamin d is actually a hormone and considered a vitamin because its VITal for our bodies. If you have low Mg or low on Zn or have a high sugar diet you wont absorb vitamin d as well because it messes with the transport protein. Which also means if your protein is low that could also affect absorption. If you don't consume enough good fats in your diet the absorption will be affected because it is a fat soluble . If you take a statin of any type that will affect absorption of vitamin d in the gut. Also caffeine and ETOH will affect absorption.

4
Witchiepoo 4 points ago +4 / -0

Not true in NY, that you only need 10 minutes outside every day to absorb enough Vit D....I’ve been a dogwalker for years, and have spent so much time in the sun every day that it bleached my hair, and I was still Vitamin D deficient. And I am a light skinned white person

2
residue69 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yeah, that other comment is wrong. Most people can only get enough vitamin D naturally at latitudes below Kansas. The doctor in this video explains it pretty well. He claims there isn't cold and flu season, but low vitamin D season.

Upstate NY gets 900 to 1300 fewer hours of sunlight than states below Kansas.

There's also this:

RDA of vitamin D ‘wrong by factor of 10’

Researchers at University of California, San Diego and Creighton University have challenged the intake of vitamin D recommended by the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Institute of Medicine (IOM), stating that their Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D underestimates the need by a factor of ten.

MemeForTheWin 1 point ago +1 / -0

10 - 20 minutes if you are south of 35 degrees latitude (35 - 40 degrees depending on your source); when you cover up in cool and cold temps you may consider supplements; source: Science Daily

This dr I think is over reacting. I'm Canaduan and I buy 200 doses of 1000iu, lasts me a couple months and its a few dollars a month, literally a bottle is like 7 bucks. The dr can still recommend you take vitamin D via supplement, sun, and milk without officially prescribing. Insurance doesn't really cover supplements anyways, I tried last time I had corporate insurance

5
Fanakapan 5 points ago +5 / -0

Remember guys, Vit D comes in two varieties, Calcifediol, and Cholecalciferol, the former is the type in supplements, and takes a couple of weeks from ingestion to becoming available, it has to be processed by the liver.

Cholecalciferol is the active form that needs no processing, and works straight away. And needless to say is not available over the counter.

I'd think the Canuck Dr is referring to Cholecalciferol. But its been so widely accepted as a treatment for hospitalised covid patients, that its hard to think it would be withheld.

2
dixond 2 points ago +2 / -0

Interesting. I am in a different Commonwealth country and can buy Cholecalciferol over the counter.

3
Shaffro 3 points ago +3 / -0

Can't you buy it as a supplement in Canada?

3
Palmertabs 3 points ago +3 / -0

i know my dads doctor at least recomended or prescribed a crazy amount of it for his MS, he bought it from the "apothecary" at the bottom of the hospital. Critically important for healthy immune system function.

1
gustodog 1 point ago +1 / -0

At any pharnacy, yes.

3
Palmertabs 3 points ago +3 / -0

cannot stress enough how important that vitamin is. Pops has MS, his dr (who is like world reknowned) said he should take way more than daily value of vitamin d. he told me, i should take or at least never be defficient in it because if i keep a good level of it in my system, the odds of me getting an autoimmune disease when im 50 are cut by 50%.

take your vitamin d, get outside, do not be deficient.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor.

"Doctor" now has zero credibility

MS is probably undiagnosed Lyme disease, especially if you live in the North East or great lakes region.

Lyme disease crushes your vitamin D and B12 levels. Also there are no kown reliable tests for Lyme disease, despite what your doctor may tell you.

Medical licensing boards, hospital admins, and all of our medical institutions need a top down lefty/commie purge if we ever want functional and rational healthcare again.

1
Alexcuse 1 point ago +1 / -0

The pediatrician (US-based) prescribed Vitamin D for my infant last year (non-Covid related, just that it was at low level which is common for infants). FSA (Flex Spending Account) rejected our prescription proof request for reimbursement (money taken from our own paycheck) We had to go back to the doctor to have him write a letter of medical necessity, and even then FSA rejected the letter as not specific enough. We ended up submitting request under other spouse’s FSA successfully.

This was during lockdowns when FSA was supposed to be more lenient. What should’ve happened was the US government should’ve encouraged people to buy Vitamin D during pandemic and have it be approved even without doctor’s letters, rather than forcing doctors to jump through hoops.
