The ukraine issues were a product of cia and obama meddling and part of the ukraine is ethnic russian and they want to rejoin russia. Same with crimea. They voted to rejoin russia by a near 90% vote but the UN and their own government said no. So putin sent in an armored column and a couple of ships into the port city waters and annexed it without a shot fired or casualty suffered and they love it now. Russia is our geopolitical opponent the same as our allies. China is the global threat.
