You know, I think it would be kind of cool if people had both a patrilinear and a matrilinear family name

Extrapolate this out after 3 generations. Use paper if needed. Which names would your great grand children have?

If they were my sons sons children then Waffles and their mother's matralinier last name.

If they were my daughters daughters children then my wife's matralinier last name, and their father's patralinear last name.

Only two last names per person: patrilinear from father, and matrilinear from mother. Mothers pass down their matrilinear name and fathers pass down their patrilinear name.

Oh also, under this arrangment, when a couple gets married the wife would take on the husband's patrilinear name, and the husband would take on the wife's matrilinear name. That way the family would all have the same last names.

And again, I'm not saying we should do this, just that it would be kind of cool.

Interesting. Thanks for explaining!
