Added to the fact that the CIA is - by very far - the worse of the two agencies, and you can see why people don't consider him a hero. No one here is out there lauding the NSA, but if snowden had successfully completed a hit job on the NSA that ended in the CIA getting more control....
well, that would be very bad, and Snowden would be quite the villain.
We don't know the whole story by any means, but Snowden is in a juxtapose of 30% hero (if he's not a CIA operative) and 70% Villain (if he was). You can play with the percentages as you like, but given that there is evidence he first worked for the CIA before joining the NSA to do what he's famous for... that's the best guess I have.
