Fun fact. Masks (gas mask technically) are the reason Hitler's mustache is the way that it is. You need a proper seal with the face or air just goes around instead of through and makes them ineffective. This is also the reason masks do pretty much nothing to protect the wearer from Covid. You would need something like a respirator with silicone seal and better filters (P100) that forces all air through that filter to stand a chance. You could still get infected through vectors like a droplet in the eye though so not perfect. Ideally you have a positive pressure hood that filters all air supplied.
Thankfully all that isn't necessary for the flu but it's good to know in case we get an actually deadly pandemic.
If you believe science, we should be taking new data into account and modifying our hypothesis and therefore changing how we respond, and we should have ended the lockdown a couple months in when the death rate was shown to be less than 1%, not 10%+. 10% would absolutely justify more extreme protocols, at least for the people at risk.
