It will be almost automatic very soon, especially once your kids are a little older. For the little ones, spend as much time as it takes teaching them to read. Succeed in that, and they can pretty much take things on their own starting around 4th grade. You'll soon realize you can accomplish more in an hour than school did all day long, so don't feel bad about not spending long hours on it. Your kids will be great!
