It's an addiction. Part of being an addict is having a weak will. You surrender to your drug. Facebook is now in "abusive dealer" territory.
If Facebook were a person, he would be the crack dealer that keep jacking up his price to force his addicts to suck his dick and then beats them with his cane. The crack heads will keep coming back because he's the only game in town no matter what he does, so he gets worse the more he realizes he can get away with anything.
"forums" and "online communities" are not facebook. That neglects the explicit addictive qualities that facebook builds into its platform.
And no, they're "free" to dump facebook, as much as a crack addict is "free" to just stop doing crack. It's that simple right?
As someone who dumped facebook years ago, I assure you it's not that simple. TO THIS DAY i have people who still give me shit about quitting their drug of choice. "What do you have something to hide? Oh you'd know about that if you were on the neighborhood facebook group. Right, I forgot you don't use facebook so you wouldn't know that my wife died.."
The difference is pretty significant. Facebook is particularly addictive by nature, the endless scroll, the hunt for "likes" and "new friends", each one gives you a tiny little endorphin and you don't have to do anything for it.
The UX is carefully crafted to do this, from the colors (all blue) that signals your brain to stay awake interrupted by the bright read notifications to jolt you...
Youtube and TD hardly compare here. The interaction with them doesn't at al provide the same addictive qualities.

Good analogy when you realize that it's all your doing. You can quit Facebook just like you can quit drugs
They're free to join forums or smaller online communities. But my guess is average facebook user hates those. They think facebook protects them.

I hate that damn cane.
Being a former junky I can confirm YouTube and the Donald are digital drugs too. But Facebook is like a pharmaceutical company, pure Zionist evil.
