Russia will launch missile strikes on all of Ukraine's military & political command infrastructure. Ukraine's air force and navy will be wiped out in less than 24 hours. Most of their political and military leadership will be dead in less than 48 hours. At that point, the Ukrainian military will be in disarray and completely unable to launch an offensive on Donbass. Russia does not seek to invade Ukraine but rather protect Donbass, and the Russian citizens living there, from a Ukrainian military offensive. That's it. No occupation necessary.
Ukraine knows this, which is why things will probably de-escalate soon. Their lives are literally on the line. Out of a sense of self-preservation, they will call off the planned invasion of Donbass, but low-level conflict will continue.
