Or is the variable of the government's use of force the difference?

Maybe they felt there was some sanctuary being physically distant from the monarchy, and it gave them the confidence to make a stand?

You have to remember that back then when someone left your presence and you said goodbye, it was likely forever.

We take that for granted now because very few people die like back then.

Yeah, but if anything, it seems like people fear death more now. Life is too good to die short.
