Advocating nothing, I wonder what was the mental resolve of those who fought in the American Revolution. What made them think their actions were justified, required, and that they were willing to die for?

Or is the variable of the government's use of force the difference?

Maybe they felt there was some sanctuary being physically distant from the monarchy, and it gave them the confidence to make a stand?

Well, words matter, right? Without that, I think people might think "this glows." I can't prove my identity outright with my words, so I have to use just the right ones and hope for the best.
