There were a lot fewer people with good phone cameras back then, and also no streaming,. So phones would often be confiscated if there was video they didn't want to get out.

We’ve got a small town 20 minutes away that’s deep Trump country (still large flags flying as you enter the town), but even there, on their FB group page, there are leftists. I’ve often thought that like-minded people should move to same area and be left alone. But after some investigating into psychology I see that no matter how hard we can try to raise our kids a certain way, some of them are going be more liberal or conservative. It's legal to open carry long guns without a permit in my state. It's true but the first few people who do defend themselves will become Martyrs for the rest of us. Sooner or later someone's going to have enough of this madness. If I saw one of my conservative Pro Trump neighbors fight a BLM mob at their house, that would probably get a few of our like-minded neighbors to join in and defend the neighborhood.
