Does anyone have any suggestions on where to purchase a bunch of canned/dry food from? I know there are some services where you buy a bunch at once, just trying to figure out if that or just stocking up at the grocery store is best. How much do most of you have on hand? Just asking for a friend who is living in the soon to be apocalypse. The friend is me lol.

IMO beprepared.com is the best. I also use local restaurant supplies like US Foods (https://www.chefstore.com/)

MREs are available in a lot of online stores, but are $$$$. staple foods like rice, beans, and canned goods can be bought anywhere. Get five gallon paint buckets with lids for storage, and add a silicon dry pouch to each bucket. Get black buckets if you can find them. Buckets are water-tight, but you can use a 3M sealant if you want. Each bucket should contain fats, carbs, protein and a can opener. Salt, sugar, and coffee are smart additions. Shortening is very stable and comes in butter flavor stick sizes. Peanut butter is cheap and stable. Tylenol, alcohol, disposable lighters, and first aid items are good too. Ammo is questionable and possibly illegal to cache away from your own home. Think through that one.

Keep one in every vehicle. Find additional places to cache your buckets away from your property. if you live innawoods, it should be easy to find places to bury a bucket discretely. wrapping the bucket in a heavy trash bag adds protection and concealment. Note the GPS coordinates, but use landmarks for dead-reckoning.

It’s very easy to overbuy. Be realistic. Sheltering in place mostly means having a few weeks worth on hand. If you really need to bug out, as in, leave the safety of your home —the absolute safest place you can be — then SHTF is really here. How long can you keep moving with a car full of valuable survival shit? What’s the real plan there? How much water can you carry?

Thank you for the info, really appreciate all of the more logistical things I didn’t think of.

you bet. There is no end to prepper advice online. Keep it simple. Go camping as often as you can. even in bad weather — especially in bad weather. think about how much noise you make. How much attention you attract, what your voice and tone reveal about you. Listen to others and see what it reveals about them. How loud they are. How they bicker. Realize that in a true SHTF situation, unseen others will be sizing you up in the same way. Some with malice. Try to avoid being the easiest prey. Learn to keep watch when you camp. learn what watch schedules are. You don’t have to go crazy with this stuff, but there are some fundamentals.

I will pass these on to my husband haha he will be much better with the “pay attention” and “avoid be the easiest prey” aspects. I can handle the grocery list. Oh, and “how they bicker” is right up my alley. Seriously though, thank you!

Is the code “gayfrogs”?? Haha I just saw the remix of that video today so I had to make a joke. I have heard of them before from Bongino I think.

Most canned or boxed food will last years. I used to keep about 3 months on hand.

You can freeze for for a good while too, get a vacuum sealer.

I currently keep my freezer full and 6+ months of boxed/canned food

Do you have a use a deep freezer? We were thinking about getting one in the future, but I think the future is probably right now.

I don't, yet. It's only me and I just bought my house. I'll be getting a chest freezer after I rewire my garage.

If you vacuum seal the food will last a long time. I generally seal and freeze 4 servings worth of food. It let's me meal prep, 1 meal when I cook then 3 days of reheat, and it's convenient if I have guests.

Vacuum sealing into small portions also let's you use fridge space very efficiently. I have a side by side fridge and I could fit a years worth of meat in there... for me.

You can also store fresh veggies this way. Blanch them (add to boiling water for 3 minutes then ice bath), dry them off, freeze them.

You'll also need a way to cook it. Don't forget the camp stove.

I have an old "camp stove" that's really just a small foldable box that can contain a fire. It's beautiful, efficient, and small.

I wish I knew the name but it's just a silver folding box

Yes! Very minimalist. Those are cool. If you're packing light, that's the way to go.

Flour is often overlooked, it's only $5 for 25lbs. Look into making hardtack if you want something extremely cheap and ready to eat.

Grocery stores are good for the basics: dried beans, rice, powdered milk, etc in smaller quantities.
