I favor a multiple causation model myself. I do think childhood trauma is one possibility, but eventually you have to go all the way back to some asshole in the caveman days who was pretty flexible, and that just doesn't seem like it works.

A Republic that lasted almost 230 years under one Constitution is pretty good. Now we know how to write an even better one that will last 300 years next time. France and Germany are like on number 4 or 5 in the past two centuries.
