A downvote is someone saying not only “no one should see this” but also a group-think mechanism that makes people go “oh that post has 10 downvotes, I better not think that way or for myself” to some people.
On the contrary, upvotes are a way to say “make sure people see that”, especially in the case of comments. Wasn’t Digg only upvote & no downvote?
I have noticed other people getting downvoted who I responded to, which makes them think I downvoted them, which causes them to downvote me.
I do not care so much about the downvotes except that it is against what we are about & entirely designed with the intention to suppress information that others do not like.
Not getting upvotes should BE the downvote. Let the site visitors sort upward all the things that are important to help others see, but nuke the downvote feature entirely so that people do not make this or that thought look toxic.
Reddit does all of that shit on purpose. We may have to have the asshole-design of reddit (reddit was designed specifically to mob-rule control speech & limit how you communicate), but we should not give brigading leftists the ability to add downvotes that may make very good points look “unpopular” either.

My point is simple. Who cares? Everyone still reads the downvoted comments so they're seen and if they stay downvoted then clearly it isn't a popular opinion or like in a lot of cases it's just a blatant lie about something.

There should be upvotes - and not upvote “everything” of course - just what you think is true. “the downvote button is not the disagree button” - people should have to speak up and give their opinion when they disagree with people. Downvote is bad. It is used on reddit to hide things under thousands of comments so people never see them. Controversial sorting is not the most downvoted stuff, for example. There is no “bottom” sort. Downvote is abused - on this site specifically - by leftist brigadiers. If something gets zero upvotes, it clearly is an unpopular opinion. The downvote is redundant and allows weasels to anonymously hurt other people’s speech without having to say why. It is a problem, does that show it more clearly?

That is fair & I respect what you are saying for you, though each person is different. The main thing, beyond all of it, is that shills brigade & can cause us to think we are downvoting each other. aside from the redundancy of the feature itself - it’s like, if you do not have something nice to say then don’t say it, in a sense. People who just downvote are basically with nothing to say & many cases are likely outsiders trying to make us think we disagree with each other when we aren’t in many cases.
