He used his departmental email address for personal reasons. Had he not done this, it would not be an issue. The main point, it seems, were his comments, which were not bad but he was speaking on behalf of other officers. A simple burner email or personal proton address would have saved him from firing - but yes, it seems extreme but I don’t think it’s wrongful since it’s more about the use of email.
