he really was an incredible american and patriot. he had many flaws but his attributes and positives far outnumbered his flaws.
he wanted to take the fight to china like we did against germany in WW1 and japan in WW2. truman and marshall wanted us to get killed by the chicoms while not even attacking chinese bases and troops on chinese soil at the chinese/north korean border. he said nukes should be considered like with japan.
"Our threat is from the insidious forces working from within ... infiltrated into positions of public trust ... into journalism, the press, the radio and the school."
i always was a fan of macarthur. 'american caesar' blew my mind. i had no idea how macarthur was the real life forrest gump of the first half of the 20th century. no wonder the philippines and japan love him so much.
When I lived in the Philippines, I spent a weekend on Corregidor and toured the whole island. Lorcha Dock is still there, this is where he departed on a PT Boat to Australia when the Japs invaded. There is a life sized statue of him there. I also retraced the steps of the Bataan Death March, incredible, words cannot describe.
I went to Corregidor also! Beautiful island and it is the perfect island to build a siege fortress. I also visited Inchon to see where MacArthur rendezvoused with destiny.
What other American can say they are studied in the history textbooks of South Korea, Japan, and the Philippines also? Mac should have been given power also in China in 1945. What a wasted opportunity.
Makes my blood boil when I hear or read people attack MacArthur for his personality or other petty issues.
I'm a huge history buff! I have traveled extensively and lived abroad for many years. I consider myself a very amateur WW II Archaeologist, explored aircraft crash sites in the Philippines, crawled through (illegally) Japanese caves while stationed in Okinawa and explored the island of Sentosa (Singapore) many times while I lived in Singapore in the early 80's. I was in Pohang, S. Korea for 4+ months for Team Spirit 89, joint war games, but had no time to do any exploring in Korea other than the bars when on liberty.
haha that's awesome. singapore has some amazing WWII historical sites! thank you for your service and thank you for being a veteran who doesn't stupidly call general macarthur 'dugout doug'.
i always had a feeling truman propagandists were the ones who spammed 'dugout doug' after WWII and they fraudulently made it sound like the majority of soldiers who served directly under macarthur called him such a disgusting nickname when it sounds like it was moreso the bitter USN and USMC under nimitz' forces and european theater U.S. servicemembers who had no fucking clue about how it was really like to serve under macarthur.
i consider macarthur like the apollo moon landings. what he did in his life was fucking amazing like the moon landings but he like apollo was so larger than life that so much folk stories and weird shit like rumors were spread about him like instead of cheering macarthur for 'i have returned' they bitch and whine about how it was a 'staged of fake' landing like a fucking fake apollo moon landing.
Gen Douglas macarthur. Do you have a quote or reference.
