If you have a smart kid in school, they should be pushed and allowed to excel, not brought down to the level of those around them. At the same time, those same schools need to focus on getting those in the lower 1/3 better educated, and not bring down those in the middle. There will always be kids who don't want to learn, and those with crappy parents that don't help out. They should focus on helping those kids with crappy parents who are wanting to learn.

They use the altruistic/racism route because it's convenient.

If you could get good enough grades to get into AP classes, you didn't have to endure being in classes with 4/5ths of the students being ignorant asshole ghetto idiots who spent all their time disrupting class and trying to start fights.

There are really only three alternatives, remedial courses prior to admission, remedial courses as part of their degree program, or they are watering down their degree requirements. Haven't gotten any responses yet.

I smell an interesting business activity in Virginia; Tutoring accelerated classes. Think Uber or Lyft but for education. Shoot, today, you could do that tutoring over Zoom or Webex.
I would think you could keep an hourly rate low enough to appeal to even working and middle class families fairly easily if you could get more than a handful of clients.

Went to magnet school. Minorities did fine in advanced classes and passed them.
Had to let in a # of "neighborhood" kids. They overturned lunch tables and failed out on the regular.
