It’s a term from the mid-20th century to describe a communist in hiding, or somebody who unwittingly embraced communist ideology.

Red = communism (not to be confused with the modern association of Red = conservative)

Just clarifying, the above def is for pinko.

For the Pinkerton definition, it is unrelated to pinko. Pinkerton was a famous detective agency founded by Allan Pinkerton and gained fame during the mid to late 1800s. Pinktertons plural refers to the Pinkerton agents in general.
