Write ins go in a separate compartment of the tabulation machine, the machine can recognize and count those on the ballot, write ins are suppose to be adjudicated, Trump and Paul are possibilities, and can be counted but Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse are not.
Edit to add: write ins force the paper ballot to be verified differently then the dominion machine, obviously the person who counts the vote matters, hence why watchers are needed, but this puts a human element back into voting when you have tabulation machines.
