The government is illegitimate if it doesn’t. The majority of people simply don’t want to realize that the government has become illegitimate and needs to be held accountable for its crimes.

If nobody supports the government it would not exist anymore. It’s only a perception of “legitimacy” that forestalls a dissolution of the bonds that cause the government to exist. The politicians are an emperor with no clothes when they can garner no support and the public realizes it. When they system works the politicians remember who they really serve.
