Everybody: "Oh, classic movies."

Me: "Old school radio shack...."

66
Konsaki 66 points ago +66 / -0

"Hey, I'm looking for a 25 micro ferad high-response capacitor and a 0.5 amp slow blow fuse."

"No problem, sir! Follow me over to the wall of components, where we have dozens of drawers full of everything you need to build anything; from ham radios to radio controlled toy-cars!"

41
Taqiyya_Mockingbird 41 points ago +41 / -0

Last time I went into a radio shack with a very similar request but wasn’t sure about the capacitor and asked for advice I was told by the fat chick with facial piercings employee “well they’re all pretty much the same”.

No, they’re not and saying shit like that about some of the items in here could get someone hurt.

This! My last trip to Radio Shack was for electronic parts (switches/capacitors etc.) The millennial kid working there was no help and didn't even know they carried that stuff or what it even was. (He tried really hard to sell me a cellphone, though.)

> Moar fun with that: I asked if they were having clearance sales due to going out of business, he said "nuh uh. we aren't going out of business" (despite the national news reporting weeks before that they were shutting down stores nationwide.) 2 weeks later, poof they were gone.

6
Taqiyya_Mockingbird 6 points ago +6 / -0

We aren’t a nation who has the skills and knowledge to be worthy of Radio Shack any more. Almost no one makes their own electronic devices. They’ll build a computer that’s great for games and porn but forget about fixing their own garage door.

2
Konsaki 2 points ago +2 / -0

To be fair, almost no general population does their own electronic maintenance/creation anymore due to micro-electronics. Back when components were 'full sized' you could actually work with and solder them easily due to how spaced they were on the boards. Now, you need a microscope and special soldering equipment to even do basic component replacements and that's even if you manage to get a wiring diagram of the device!

It's funny because in the 90's everyone was trying very hard to forget the 80's, now everyone seems to miss them. There was definitely something special about that decade that we'll never have again.

50
SocialJudgmntWarrior 50 points ago +50 / -0

80's were the best. We poured 100s of quarters into Donkey Kong, shot each other with BB guns and bottle rockets, stole Playboys out of the neighbor's garage, drank beer in the woods, made out with girls in parked cars, and didn't come home until it was dark. Today? Kids are glued to their phones and cry because they're white.

8
Cavetoad_1776 8 points ago +8 / -0

This sums up the 80s very well for myself and my friends.

Add in hanging out at the park and or lake and playing hacky-sack you've nailed it. Oh and driving around trying to find who had some weed.

30
TownesVanCamp 30 points ago +31 / -1

2 of those movies were in constant rotation at my house. I was a 13 year old mall kid. Every Saturday with 40 bucks in my pocket. We would roam the halls, eat at Sabaro’s, watch a movie, buy some junk food at a movie and make out with a random girl from my school in an elevator. We were good kids exploring materialism. It was a good year.

32
Choad 32 points ago +33 / -1

Dam, $40 in your pocket, you were spoiled. My parents didn't give me any money, I was the 14 year old kid that lied about his age to get the job at Peanut shack across from Sabaro's and traded candy for pizza!!

31
TownesVanCamp 31 points ago +31 / -0

$40 that I earned by bailing alfalfa, hauling alfalfa, hauling water buckets, shoveling shit from horse stalls, shoveling shit from the bird dog kennels, and brush hogging a 10 acre pasture every month. There were other ways I earned money as well. Although my parents never taught me the value of money, I earned it to burn it. I had to learn to use it wisely on my own.

You presume a bit much.

11
Choad 11 points ago +11 / -0

Just out of curiosity are you anywhere near Nebraska. You know what alfalfa is and most places I have been to people think Alfalfa is just a Little Rascals character.

14
TownesVanCamp 14 points ago +14 / -0

Kansas. I love it when people say hay and mean straw.

10
Choad 10 points ago +10 / -0

Ah , Kansas bull hauler territory. I am a commercial driver and I like traveling across Kansas back highways cause the bull haulers lead the way and know where you can put the pedal down and move out. I used to live just across the line in Lincoln,NE. My father was USAF and stationed at Ofut in late 70's

8
Billbuttlickerr 8 points ago +8 / -0

Must’ve been jacked. Alfalfa bails are fucking heavy compared to regular bails.

5
operatorstorm712 5 points ago +5 / -0

Are you like my doppleganger or something?

God help you if the guy doing the baling started cranking out those really heavy bales (or set it too loose, which made your job frustrating and long).

Except my cousins and I had to farm ourselves out -- because the fam was of the opinion that feeding and housing you was payment enough, so you worked for free for them. And they made you pay for your school clothes, gas money, fun money because "well, you're earning some money now, so...".

4
TownesVanCamp 4 points ago +4 / -0

Very little was earned on our farm. Pop would let me get the good basketball shoes. But that’s about it. Grandpa was a dairy farmer. i worked for him, cousins were custom cutters with stock cattle. I helped them. We threw straw for .01/ bale and alfalfa for .03. Slave wages when you consider the work being done

4
operatorstorm712 4 points ago +4 / -0

I lived this life (although, not on a dairy farm -- worked a bit for some dairy farmers though, but after freshman year in school I was strictly horse farm help, which I much appreciated). $2.00/hr. here...and yeah, they were slave wages, but at the time, "we're rich bitches!"

And then I got a little older, and was the person people called to work/groom horses...and then I was making some pretty good money and didn't have to buck bales or shovel shit all the time. For which my cousins got pissed -- well assholes, you had just as much opportunity to learn to ride as me...you just didn't want to...better get back to your chores; I'm doing mine! Don't make me have to step in and bail you out! The cousin that got good at fixing machinery and driving the grain trucks was also the focus of much resentfulness...and equally sorry, not sorry. Farm life is a ruthless teacher.

5
Choad 5 points ago +5 / -0

Ah, farm boy. Justin Ropers or Tony Lamas?

8
TownesVanCamp 8 points ago +8 / -0

Knee high muck boots from tractor supply mostly.

6
operatorstorm712 6 points ago +6 / -0

Farm boy confirmed!

3
Choad 3 points ago +3 / -0

I was the kid pissing off all the farm-boys, but that was well before the 80's when I lived in Nebraska I was a kid and we would drag all the square bails to one spot in the field and stack them up to make a fort. Now that I typed it out and rethought about it maybe they were actually thankful we did the gathering, idk..

3
operatorstorm712 3 points ago +3 / -0

Well, you did put it all in one spot, so the guy driving the rack wagon was likely happy.

4
Jack_HinsonTN 4 points ago +4 / -0

Ah, a fellow man of culture. My preferred footwear as well on the farm. Makes it easy to cross the creek, and easy to throw some boots on when you have to grab Doctor Twelve Guage and deal with the Opossum raiding the chickens at 1:00 AM.

3

8
prayinpede 8 points ago +8 / -0

6
Choad 6 points ago +6 / -0

I think maybe even more. If I am not mistaken I bought my Chuck Taylor Converse high tops for about $18 - $20 . The rich kids had Van's and Sabego's.

6
TownesVanCamp 6 points ago +6 / -0

It’s about 90 bucks

4
Oda_nicullah 4 points ago +4 / -0

Chicks love dudes with money!

7
TownesVanCamp 7 points ago +7 / -0

It’s instinct. Don’t fault them for it. They want a dude who can provide for them and their off spring. Once upon a time it was the best hunters and warriors, now that we don’t hunt and gather they want a fat wallet because it is an indication of ability to provide.

But if a dude can look like the classic hunter and warrior and have a fat wallet, well, he’s gonna score a lot. That dude is a Chad as I believe the kids these days say.

7
TownesVanCamp 7 points ago +7 / -0

15
Based_in_Space 15 points ago +15 / -0

I recall as a kid in 80s lots of good movies.

Now the movies are social justice trash.

9
Erikabodereka 9 points ago +9 / -0

we watch movies at my house not by the the 5 star review, but the year it came out. Last night we watched Vibes (1988) with Jeff Goldblum and Cyndi Lauper. It was a dumb movie, but at least we weren't bombarded with SJW garbage.

5
RegularAmerican 5 points ago +5 / -0

Some of it was subtly there but you're right you kinda have to pay attention to notice. I love to watch blackpilled with Devin Stack he always breaks down iconic old movies and how they were programming people from the start

3
CarpenterRichard 3 points ago +3 / -0

I watch his movie analyses too. He really gets it right. They been doing this for a long time.

3
russianbot4673 3 points ago +3 / -0

it's not so subtle with lost boys, which is full of gayness and was directed by the same gay dude who turned batman into an absolute abomination in the 90s.

2
Thrasymachus 2 points ago +2 / -0

This is increasingly the case. Even the "best" contemporary movies are populated by actors, directors, and producers who are leftist trash, rendering the films themselves terrible by association even in the (rare) cases where the films aren't themselves woke garbage. I'm finding that watching anything old, even middling, forgotten films, is better than modern "cinema".

2
KingSweyn 2 points ago +2 / -0

A lot of child stars were victims of Pedowood. Hollywood was a lot more entertaining back then, but only 1% less evil.

2
russianbot4673 2 points ago +2 / -0

it's funny you say that though because lost boys, while it can be a fun watch, is full of all kinds of super gay stuff. and was directed by a gay dude. it's like he was trying to put subliminal gayness all over that movie.

1
Based_in_Space 1 point ago +1 / -0

Lost boys was ok but I liked a lot of other movies better I’d prob have to watch thru again to pick up on the gay stuff as prob went over my head as a kid.

I remember watching goonies over and over when we had a vhs tape of it. And ghostbusters a couple others like Princess Bride and Short Circuit which are good for kids. And Aliens was awesome also right in that timeframe (1986).

1
russianbot4673 1 point ago +1 / -0

yeah those are all classics for sure and they don't make them like that any more. goonies is one of my all-time favs. also indiana jones (original trilogy) and back to the future trilogy.

13
mylittleredpill 13 points ago +13 / -0

I miss radio shack for being able to grab small components like capacitors, LEDs and other sundries for projects I had and computer repair. My local electronics store folded too, sadly.

I never got to experience the 80s since i was born in the middle of the decade. One of the times I wish time machines were a thing.

5
Mister_anonymous 5 points ago +6 / -1

Similar- just snippets and hazy memories. Though I definitely remember the original Nintendo, Amiga computer games, the yellow Sun before chemtrails turned it white ...

3
SteelBallRun1890 3 points ago +3 / -0

yellow sun?

2
Ottoandersson 2 points ago +2 / -0

I started doing sun gazing lately. It definitely makes me more aware of Chem trails. It's one of the biggest mysteries I talk about with my wife. Can you link me or tell me more about yellow sun or theories on Chem trails? Last I heard was a hypothesis about blocking the natural energy given by the sun.

2
Choad 2 points ago +3 / -1

there are still a few left that were franchise owned but rare and very hard to find. They don't have the components like they used to though. This is why China is kicking our ass in technology.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1k8i9GQSEo

Radio Shack on steroids.

1
Ottoandersson 1 point ago +1 / -0

I worked at RadioShack briefly ten years ago. People that came in for those parts were usually mocked by my coworkers. Now I realize that they were pretty based and non consumerist fix it uppers.

1
mylittleredpill 1 point ago +1 / -0

I try to fix electronics if i can before scrapping them and buying new. I tried this with the iMac G5 (the first ones with the motherboards that had bad caps) but the solder they used was higher temp than what my iron could muster so i ended up ruining the board sadly.

But yea, I dont necessarily need new all the time, just good working or easily fixed. Was also where I was getting my de-solder braid.

10
BoltCarrierGroup 10 points ago +10 / -0

I was born in 89', but my wife and I both talk about how sick the 80's probably were to be a teenager in.

All of my favorite movies are from the 80's. No one gave a fuck about plastic straws, big V8's and banning beef. Movies promoted masculinity and outrageous fight scenes.

God damn I wish we could get back to that.

5
RegularAmerican 5 points ago +5 / -0

I was born in 87 and my dad was probably going around saying how much the 80s sucked compared to the 1950s

5
KingSweyn 5 points ago +5 / -0

I'm sure he was right. Nothing makes white people happier than embracing the principles of "the Glory of Rome": worshipping strength, beauty, fertility, fraternity, and excellence.

The 1950s was the last time we were reasonably close to such ideals. Already at that time, the misanthrope tribe and natural born losers were forming an alliance to place the unworthy atop society. Although a meritocratic society is objectively best for everyone, losers still want to win, so they cheat. When they eventually cheat and win, they undermine the merit testing, like making IQ tests illegal for pre-employment screenings, or giving out participation trophies. If the losers are left unmolested for long enough, the people of real merit will feel like outcasts in the society they should be administrating. This is the emotional basis of communism: that we have an obligation to make losers feel better about themselves.

RegularAmerican 1 point ago +1 / -0

This is apparently a production photo for "Stranger Things"; this is filmed at Gwinnett place mall, just north of Atlanta. The new season of the show is jumping ahead to '87.

edit weird, this AJC article mentions a movie is being filmed there (not stranger things, despite url), and there's also a removed story from local news CBS affiliate stating stranger things is filming there. https://www.ajc.com/life/radiotvtalk-blog/stranger-things-back-at-gwinnett-place-mall-and-its-now-1987/SKAYTAG4LJGV5IWI2BZE6AVPKA/

I remember going to opening night of Predator with my boyfriend at the time and waiting in line for hours to see it. So awesome! We were yelling "get to the choppah" at each other for weeks. Such unbelievably good times. If you didn't turn 21 before 9/11, you have no idea how amazing things were.
