De Blasio giving freed NYC inmates MetroCards and gift cards

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s latest soft-on-crime initiative has workers stationed on Rikers Island presenting newly released jailbirds with free transit passes and two $25 debit cards each, The Post has learned.

Plans even call for the addition of prepaid, “burner”-style cellphones and drawstring bags for the ex-inmates to carry their swag, a source familiar with the program said.

The “crime pays” giveaways build on another de Blasio policy — revealed by The Post last month — that showers freebies including Mets tickets on prisoners being released under the state’s new bail-reform law.

They get a brick, a crowbar, some rags and a flask of lantern oil.

It's the "no cash bail" reform. Cash bail is racist, because poor people can't afford it (and thus stay in jail), while middle-class or wealthier people just pay the bail.

Since this is a "nonviolent" crime, he's eligible for "no cash bail". That's an odd definition of nonviolent, since multiple property damages sounds violent to a normal person.

If he was wearing a mask, there is probably no room in the jail for him.

I guess ultimately he still has to answer for the crimes, he just doesn’t have to stay in jail until the court date.

Problem is, these are career criminals who will simply commit another crime as they wait to see the judge.

It’s a clusterfuck, for sure.

so...he's just going to show up and get sentenced?

Depending on his level of truancy, probably not. He will be brought back for another crime and the warrant for the previous will keep without bail.

This is only if bail is allowed that they are released on a P.R. Bond.

We all should start doing non violent crimes. I am sure they would find a reason to start keeping people in jail again.

It’s about having money for bail. Not that I agree with it because the crimes they’re allowing people to bail out on are unconscionable.

Still, losing the bail bond is a deterrent to skipping the court date. Without that there’s no reason to feel the need to show up.

If they skip the court date they should be found guilty and when next they run into the law get scooped up and dumped in prison.

If they skip they get a failure to appear warrant, scooped up and denied bail. Many times they commit another crime before they’re picked up on the warrant.
