you can cram 30 into a 30rd mag, but when you insert any mag into a closed bolt (pistol or rifle, where the slide/bolt isn't open and locked back but rather closed in the ready-to-fire position) the bolt is going to push down on the top rounds in the mag just a little bit. so there need to be a little bit of give, as in a little extra room in the mag for those rounds to be smushed down into. if the mag is fully full, there's often no extra room, which means the mag wont reliably seat fully up in the gun and under stress of fighting you might insert thinking you've got it seated but it's not and then falls out when you're running/ducking/diving/dodging.
AND even if you do seat it and it's clicked in there, now the extra pressure/friction against the bottom of the bolt from those top rounds could cause your gun to jam on that first round fired because the bolt won't be sliding freely.
a decent quality 30rd mag is OK if topped off w/ 30 if you load the mag into the gun on an open bolt, rather than a closed bolt tactical-reload.
but really now, in the big picture, EVERYONE HERE REALLY OUGHT TO KNOW THIS SHIT ALREADY.
