Providing clarification on the rule surrounding Twitter links and screenshots - they are permitted.

The solution to reducing the traffic that we send them (and therefore $ that we generate for them) is not to remove one of the most prominent sources of information. By isolating ourselves from this content in all forms, we are hurting ourselves more than we are hurting them, in what is already a period of instability.

We continue to encourage screenshots rather than tweet links, and also encourage sharing the content of a tweet by itself, such as extracting the link or image from a tweet. Moderators of this community may avoid stickying direct Twitter links in order to further encourage the above.

A long term solution would be to replace Twitter’s embeds system with something custom and equivalent, similar to Nitter - which is a suggestion that we had previously heard, considered, and determined wasn't the correct solution. Additionally, the problem with converting Twitter links to simple screenshots is the lack of support for videos and article links. Automatically converting Twitter links to the archived equivalent could be an adequate stopgap solution, but would drop support for embeds.

Some other notes:

  • Vote Manipulation: Aware. There are changes coming on the backend for this.
  • Twitter embeds: Seen reports that Twitter embed related resources are loaded in when they aren’t needed, will be looked at
  • Updates: Biggest upgrade to Win thus far is coming

Please post platform concerns, suggestions etc to c/meta rather than to The Donald so that they will get looked at.

"By isolating ourselves from this content in all forms, we are hurting ourselves more than we are hurting them, in what is already a period of instability".

You sound like a beaten woman who just can't justify leaving her abuser. ANYONE going to twitter, posting links, posting screen grabs, they are all generating revenue for twitter - our sworn enemy. twitter banned the PRESIDENT OF THE USA, yet you want to continue to allow things from their site to be posted here. Makes me think you are a fucking shill, doggos.

also, you complain about isolating ourselves - isn't that exactly what this board is? its a containment board for all of us Trump people. Nothing has ever changed in the political conversation, or in anyones mind, because of some BS post on twitter. Don't give us this isolation is bad BS when the entire site you run is isolationist.

wtf is gained by being on twitter with a bunch of non-convertible bots? NOTHING. Wake the fuck up, you are personally hurting our movement with your cuckishness and your willingness to take twitter dick deep in your throat.

4
hillaryforprison 4 points ago +4 / -0

I agree with this. Twitter and Facebook and YouTube has already isolated itself away from conservatives and profiles and silences them were possible to try to make their lives miserable. I see no value in associating with that and supporting them. There are already conservative alternatives existing, so to continue to use big tech is to continue to empower them. If all conservatives stopped using their services overnight, they would be in big trouble financially, which would be something to really celebrate.

61
Shwoogin 61 points ago +62 / -1

We need embed capabilities for alt tech sites like gab, parler, and rumble! We have bitchute, which is awesome, but the ability to embed others would help us immensely.

54
Doggos [S] 54 points ago +55 / -1

Last I checked:

  • Parler requires login, so naturally doesn't support embeds
  • Rumble supports embeds but rather than simply allowing to embed the video file, requires embedding a bunch of their Javascript
  • Gab either didn't support embeds or was similar to Rumble

9
FuckGovernment 9 points ago +10 / -1

Well, such allegations date back farther.

For example: https://www.theburkean.ie/articles/2020/12/13/bitchute-removes-extremist-content-in-partnership-with-hope-not-hate

They are based out of UK and we all know UK is drifting toward fascism. Being based in UK subjects BitChute to all the UK's anti-free speech policies and fascist information control.

“When we remove channels it’s according to our rules, incitement to violence, terrorism, pirating movies, are some examples of rules we enforce” stated an official BitChute account in relation to charges of censorship brought against it.

Seems they are bowing to pressure from phony organizations such as "Hope Not Hate."

Granted, it is a far more free speech platform than youtube. But once they begin censoring things and bowing to these phony "anti hate speech" organizations it becomes a slippery slope.

I think that Odysee is rapidly becoming the platform of choice for hosting video content.

2
trumpmixtape 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yes, they banned Black Crimes Matter. They're not free speech, they just havent made any major moves for people to notice. They will though. Its only a matter of time.

Run all that commie shit through https://archive.ph/ before posting.

13
contribulation 13 points ago +13 / -0

Many of the archive web sites block VPNs, effectively disabling VPN users from seeing the linked site, even through the archive link.

Communities.win and associated sites shouldn't automatically rewrite links as links to archive sites without first verifying the archive won't block a VPN.

3
spezisacuckold 3 points ago +3 / -0

So we should self host our own web archiver. At the very least use a decentralized one.

we can't isolate ourselves from those networks. We need to share what's being shared there so we can correct their propaganda and fight their narratives. You can't pretend ignoring Twitter makes their propaganda go away. It's still a ubiquitous platform most normies use and that's unfortunately how you're going to reach them at least to keep encouraging them to come here

13
-f-b-i- 13 points ago +17 / -4

most normies use

No, this is not true. They have a fraction of the users of the other platforms and have struggled with this for a decade. Their traffic is as fake as Reddit's ex-CEO pointed out about her platform.

Their product is promoting narrative. They mine data from users and assist in tracking users across the open internet. Data is centralized and exchanged, then shared. Algorithms are trained and expanded.

We participate.

If you want to discuss a real threat to us: leaving their echo chamber expands their power to manipulate their users. They are aware of this, it is a catch 22. We are trapped.

This is a very good reason to build new networks. Including .win.

Twitter is not an American company. They are a rogue actor, aligned with foreign entities, and an enemy of the people. We are fools for seeing them in any other light. We are fools if we think, long term, we should maintain any presence on their network.

Does anybody know if there's a way to get around nitter's rate limiting? Sometimes I'll post a twitter link as a source to show something is official. I worry that if I used nitter, it would become useless after twenty or so people clicked on it. Or is it only me that's getting rate limited? I don't really understand how this kind of stuff works.

8
-f-b-i- 8 points ago +9 / -1

I would say that a screenshot with link in comments to nitter would be best in that situation.

4
Women4Trump2020 4 points ago +4 / -0

That’s what I would say to do too. The majority can get quick information without the click.

7
residue69 7 points ago +7 / -0

I really wish Nitter would automatically redirect you to another instance when one is limited.

I use a plugin called Privacy Redirect that is supposed to rotate instances, but doesn't. Probably interference from one of my other plugins though.

3
scyenceFiction 3 points ago +3 / -0

Doing some research to see if a nitter.win instance could be possible and limit the incoming links to communities.win (rather than the Internet at large). I'll post up to Meta if I can find a path.

Problem: Losing the links and videos when you post an image of a tweet.

Here is one solution, that would improve Patriots.win at the same time.

Often, when users post an image or a link, they also want to include a comment, or details (such as related links).

The flawed solution has been to post your image or link, then immediately post a comment, and hope that other users will continue to upvote that comment, to keep it at the top. Once in a while, a nice moderator will notice, and pin the comment.

The best solution, which I think would improve the site in general, would be to always allow some text with a post, just below the image or link, unless it's a text-only post.

I would like this, not just for myself, but so that other users could provide me with additional information, to point out what makes the image or link significant, or to provide additional information, such as a related link.

Another solution, though not quite as elegant, would be to allow the original poster to pin one (just one) of his own comments.

As always, thank you for your fine work, that makes this site possible.

2
deplorable-d00d 2 points ago +2 / -0

You can save Twitter videos locally using any number of free web services. Just search for "Twitter video save". Then upload them somewhere else for archiving.

2
maga_mama_757 2 points ago +3 / -1

This would be VERY helpful. I post a lot of screen shots, not just to twitter. Oftentimes links just simply don't get read because people are too busy (or sometimes lazy!), so I try and make it as simple as possible for people to get the information they might be interested in by capturing the main points of what I read.

The problem with that, as you said, is that unless the follow up comment with the link/source/context/more info gets a ton of upvotes, it gets lost, so we're stuck with just a screenshot to go by.

I remember a mod once used a tool that wasn't yet available to us - there was a "context" tool right next to the post somewhere. So he posted the screenshot or whatever it was, and then you could click on the "context" tab to get the link for more information. Is that something that will be available to everyone at some point?

Can there be any doubt how many of those Tweets have been produced by artificial intelligence; i.e., robots? https://www.minds.com/edwardsshaw/

5
Dictator_Bob 5 points ago +5 / -0

We must understand that twitter "screenshots" are the real Twitter product. They are the weakest of the social networks on active human users. The power they have is in projecting so-called "narrative", and enabling their "blue check" aristocracy that outlet. This product is weaponized in the literal sense against nation states and has been turned from destabilizing North Africa to destabilizing the United States.

We must understand that Twitter is a rogue subversive group beholden to foreign investment.

We must understand that rogue agency within the United States federal infrastructure has embedded itself within the Twitter ecosystem.

We must continue to work with alternative solutions until we find a way to permanently replace centralized social media.

There must be a reckoning here. We, as one people, need a free and open internet. There is no exception to this and there is no alternative to this. We all deserve and have a right to speak our minds as much as we have a right to tell each other to shut up, or walk away from a conversation.

Also block, spoof or turn off your referrer headers. I hate Firefox lately, but you can do all the above with it, and you don't need plugins/add-ons.

Thanks. When I can, I do screenshot tweets. It's only when a video that I think that's important for people to view is in it that I link to a tweet. Although, sometimes, I AM tempted to link to the tweet to give a bump to the analytics on a particular tweet or user; also as a way to passive-aggressively tell Twitter that a content or a user has traction.

3
spezisacuckold 3 points ago +3 / -0

Automatically converting Twitter links to the archived equivalent could be an adequate stopgap solution, but would drop support for embeds.

This would be the best stopgap and I have mentioned it several times over several months.

Yes, it's not perfect, but most posts shared from Twitter are normal text tweets or pics, NOT videos. If we can reduce 90% of the traffic coming from this community (other 10% being those video tweets), I would say that's a massive temporary success.

Users still have the option to manually click through archived sites to get to the live site if they really want to interact with the hostile site.

1
OconusLurex 1 point ago +1 / -0

If we can reduce 90% of the traffic coming from this community (other 10% being those video tweets), I would say that's a massive temporary success.

100% agreed.

I generally prefer nitter since it makes all the content available, including replies, etc., in real time, and it also plays videos, but archive links are especially useful for content that is likely to be removed. Both are excellent tools, and if there was some autoconversion tool, or even a prompt in the submission box urging people to consider converting the link, it'd make a big difference imo.

2
spezisacuckold 2 points ago +2 / -0

We can go one step further and archive Nitter links!

e.g. https://archive.is/1cRYj#selection-174.0-180.0

It could easily be set up so that any user's Twitter link submitted on communities.win has the option to be auto-routed through Nitter (self hosted / decentralized preferred), and then that link gets auto-routed through a web archive engine (self hosted / decentralized preferred) like Archive.is.

The user clicks the link which takes them to the archive, and if they want video they click through to the Nitter link, and if they then want to interact with a hostile website they can click through to Twitter.

3

Sometimes I post Twit screenshots. Other times, when I've found the comments on the feed amusing, I don't, because I think others might want a laugh, too. And most people are accessing Twitter to take a screenshot, anyway (just as they did when Trump had his account), so I don't see what the big deal is.

There's a lot of info on those platforms and even those who, like me, don't even have a FB, IG, or Twit account, find it informative.

Instead of the guys here (because I'm surprised to say it's mostly guys who do this) shaking their fingers at us like old schoolmarms, they should just bypass it if they're not interested; few things in life are that simple.

Oh yeah, and they can start hitting the "deport" button when posters tell us we're sucking Trump's dick or "gargling his balls" 🙄. That'd clean up the place--and that's what really needs to happen while it's still manageable.

Fight the real enemy.

'In what is already a period of instability. ' What does this mean? Is this a reference to the site itself? And perhaps its future? That sentence stood out to me, and it's concerning.

My two biggest issues with this site on mobile are that I can no longer zoom in on anything on the main page (when trying to figure out if the post is worth clicking on) and if I open the link and try to zoom in the side bar pops out and blocks everything. It would be nice if these could be fixed. Being able to completely disable the sidebar would be great because I never use it.

What about using another service like the Internet Archive to archive the tweets and share the archived link?

I'd also like to suggest we be a bit more conscious of who we're elevating around here.

What happens when the Matt Walsh's of the world have to confront that they cucked on election fraud?

That dude is like a hero around here because of his quality takes on culture or whatever but he's an election fraud denying pussybitch.

Are we still a high-energy rally for supporters of President Trump or some DailyWire culture complainer cuck losers?

Anyone who denied THE BIG LIE should be shunned from our community here even if they TOTALLY DESTROY some college student or whatever.

I couldn't agree more! I view things like this the same way I do VPN's. They are a minor inconvenience but are a step in the right direction to unplug from the strings that attach you and your meta data to these tech oligarchs.

Being able to post videos from Twitter without linking to Twitter would be like, a really big deal. Heck, just being able to post vids here using .win hosting would be pretty sweet.

The solution for posting videos from Twitter without giving them ad revenue is just for people to use their phones and screen record the videos, then post them on a file sharing site.

Is there some way to grab tweets and import them into Gab? A bot or something? I know that Gab had managed to grab a lot of Trump's recent tweets (as well as of those of the Racist Left).

The solution to reducing the traffic that we send them (and therefore $ that we generate for them) is not to remove one of the most prominent sources of information.

If more fucking places saw things this way, we'd all be better off. I appreciate this sentence specifically
