You'll lose that land just as soon as you can't pay the property tax, so have a plan for that.

Yeah definitely. It isn't the the end all be all as it used to be. However in many of the states where big plots are still available property tax is still pretty low. Especially if you lease some of it out as farmland. You're correct though in the sense one never "owns" land anymore.
